Air Pressure Booster Systems - How Does a High Pressure Booster Work?

Compressed air is an essential requirement for many industrial processes such as sandblasting, pressure testing, and more. Typically, pressurized air is provided by standard air compressors, such as rotary screw, rotary vane, and reciprocating piston. However, for high power applications, the air pressure from these systems is often insufficient to perform a given process.

Therefore, plants may need to increase the air pressure from the primary feed. Special processes in industrial plants require very high pressure oil-free or lubricated air.

The use of booster compressors can easily and efficiently generate high-pressure compressed air. But what are they?

This article will discuss what booster compressors are, how they work, and common industrial applications.

What is a booster compressor?

A booster system is a device used to increase or amplify the air pressure from an existing compression system by passing it through additional compression stages. Booster air compressors can increase existing air pressure from 80 – 150 psig to 2000 psig.

Using a compressed air booster is one of the most cost-effective ways to obtain the higher process gas pressures required by industrial plants.

Working principle of air pressure booster

A booster air compressor or compressed air pressure amplifier works on the simple principle that in a closed system (not a vacuum), the pressure increases as the volume decreases. The air booster compression system includes a receiving tank, piping and a discharge tank.

The receiving tank has an inlet for receiving compressed process air from the main feed and directing it through several compression stages to further increase the pressure. Additionally, the receiver tank serves as limited storage capacity when the system is not actively delivering compressed air.

After a series of compression stages, the pressurized air is piped into a discharge tank, which contains an outlet to supply the gas to the site.

Air pressure booster application

Air pressure boosters are used in a variety of industrial applications, including the following.

PET bottle manufacturing
Automated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) manufacturing requires a continuous supply of high pressure gas that cannot be provided by standard compression systems. Booster air compressors help deliver high-pressure air to the blow molding machines that produce PET bottles. Blow molding uses compressed air to force molten thermoplastic into a mold.

Industrial Stress Test
Pressure testing of pipes, tubing, vessels, piping systems, etc. helps to determine their integrity, reliability and tightness before and after field commissioning. It is usually performed during maintenance operations to ensure that essential equipment is functional and in good condition.

The compressed air or nitrogen leak test procedure (also known as a pneumatic test) involves passing compressed air through a container to the desired pressure range and then "venting" the gas through a pressure relief valve located on the system under test. Pneumatic booster pumps or pneumatic air boosters are suitable for this purpose.
